Work Rights For Students

Students in New Zealand can earn some pocket money by working along with studies. Here are some important facts to work with studies.

  • International students who are on a student visa can work part-time up to 20 hours a week during classes and full-time on scheduled holidays.
  • They are not allowed to be self-employed. They must be employed by someone with an employment agreement, and not as an independent contractor.
  • Students of a Masters by research or Doctoral degree at a New Zealand institution are permitted to work full-time while they are studying.

Post-study Employment Rights

Students are allowed to continue in the country for a stipulated time after completion of their studies. There are two types of post-study visas available – the open visa and the employer-assisted visa.

Post Study Work Visa (Open)

The Post Study Work Visa (Open) allows you to find a job that is relevant to your qualification. It’s valid for 12 months, and during this time you can work for almost any employer in New Zealand. After you have found a job relevant to your qualification you can apply for a Post Study Work Visa (Employer Assisted).

Post Study Work Visa (Employer Assisted)

The Post Study Work Visa (Employer Assisted) allows you to stay in New Zealand and work for a specific employer for a further two years, if your job is relevant to your qualification. To be granted a visa, you must hold a Post Study Work Visa – Open or apply no later than 3 months after the end date of your student visa (no later than 6 months if the qualification was a Doctoral Degree).

Easy Application & Visa Process

New Zealand’s visa application and the acquisition process is fairly simple.

Even if there is something that may prevent you from getting a visa to come into the country, if you are able to explain why you’ve decided to go to New Zealand, and create a good Statement of Purpose, you will usually get a visa.

Besides, after you graduate, you can work in the country for up to a year. If your job is related to the degree that you received, then you can actually apply to get permanent residency, and you will most likely get it within 6 months of your application.

Dependents Stay

Dependents can accompany if the applicant is traveling for the post- graduate course or a Level 7 course which is under skill shortage area.
